Sherwin-Williams Warns of 'Muted Demand' Into 2027. What the Paint Giant Says About Housing and Home Renovation

Key facts
  • Sherwin-Williams reported Q3 2026 net sales of $6.86 billion, up 7.9%, helped by mid-single-digit price increases.
  • Adjusted EPS rose 1.1% to $3.63, below the roughly $3.69 analysts expected. Net income fell 1.5% to $821 million.
  • Paint Stores Group sales rose 4.7%; Performance Coatings rose 8.8%. Management said underlying volumes stayed muted.
  • Gross margin was squeezed by higher raw material and supply chain costs and the dilutive Suvinil acquisition.
  • The company narrowed 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $11.85–$12.15. CEO Heidi Petz said indicators point to muted demand into 2027.

Sales grew in every segment, but mostly because of mid-single-digit price increases. Management said underlying market volumes stayed muted. In plain English: customers paid more per gallon, but didn't buy many more gallons.

The warning

The line that got attention came from CEO Heidi Petz: "Customer sentiment and the leading indicators we track point to muted demand over the remainder of the year and into 2027."

That's a significant statement. Paint companies see demand early because painting is one of the first things people do when they buy, sell or renovate a home.

Why demand is weak

Housing turnover is low. With mortgage rates high, many homeowners locked into low rates won't move. Fewer sales mean fewer repaints.

Rates are going up, not down. The Fed hiked in September and markets expect another hike in December (our preview). The 10-year Treasury is near 5%.

Costs are rising. Gross margin was pressured by higher raw material and supply chain costs. Many paint ingredients are petroleum-based, and oil is near $100 a barrel.

Acquisition dilution. The Suvinil deal in Brazil adds revenue but at lower margins for now.

Not all bad news

On the same day, new home sales came in at 676,000 annualized, above expectations, and consumer confidence jumped. Those are early positives, but they haven't yet shown up in paint volumes.

Sherwin-Williams also kept growing in Performance Coatings, which serves industrial and auto customers, up 8.8%.

What it means for investors

Housing is still stuck. When a company with Sherwin-Williams's scale says demand will stay soft into 2027, it's a signal for the whole housing ecosystem: homebuilders, home-improvement retailers, furniture makers and building materials. See the homebuilders' rate trap.

Pricing power protects profits, but has limits. Raising prices keeps earnings stable in a downturn, but customers eventually push back.

Defensive doesn't mean immune. Quality companies with long dividend records still feel the economic cycle. Our guide to recession-proof investing explains which sectors actually hold up.

Frequently asked questions

How did Sherwin-Williams do in Q3 2026?

Net sales rose 7.9% to $6.86 billion, mostly from price increases. Adjusted EPS rose 1.1% to $3.63, slightly below estimates of about $3.69, and net income fell 1.5% to $821 million.

What did Sherwin-Williams say about demand?

CEO Heidi Petz said customer sentiment and the leading indicators the company tracks point to muted demand over the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. Management said underlying market volumes stayed soft even though sales grew in all segments.

What is Sherwin-Williams's 2026 guidance?

The company narrowed full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $11.85–$12.15 and revised GAAP EPS guidance to $10.92–$11.22.

Why is paint demand a housing indicator?

People repaint when they buy, sell or renovate homes. When existing home sales are slow and mortgage rates are high, fewer homes change hands and fewer renovations happen, so paint volumes fall. Paint makers often see the slowdown, and the recovery, early.

Is Sherwin-Williams a good defensive stock?

It has pricing power and a long dividend-growth record, which helps in soft markets. But it's still tied to housing and construction, so it isn't fully defensive. This quarter showed it can raise prices, but not volumes, when demand is weak.
