What's driving it
Lending is the engine. Lending revenue rose 66% to $821 million, and the segment's contribution profit rose 74%. Originations broke down as:
- Personal loans: $12.6 billion (+69%), including $3.6 billion made for third parties
- Student loans: $2.9 billion (+96%)
- Home loans: $1.4 billion (+44%)
The Loan Platform Business is a key piece. SoFi originates loans for other investors and earns fees without keeping the loans on its balance sheet. It added $153 million of revenue this quarter.
Deposits fund it. Because SoFi is a chartered bank, it can use customer deposits, now $51.3 billion, to fund loans more cheaply than fintechs that rely on outside capital. Its net interest margin was a high 6.14%.
Financial services (bank accounts, investing, credit cards) grew revenue 25% to $525 million.
Credit quality improved
This is what skeptics watch most. A lender growing this fast can hide problems until a downturn.
For now, credit looks better, not worse. The adjusted personal loan net charge-off rate fell to about 3.4%, down 80 basis points from a year ago. The reported rate was 2.26%.
Guidance went up, a lot
| 2026 (raised) | 2027 (new) | |
|---|---|---|
| Adjusted net revenue | ~$5.04 billion | ~$6.4 billion |
| Adjusted EBITDA | ~$1.66 billion | ~$2.24 billion |
| Net income | ~$840 million | ~$1.28 billion |
| EPS | ~$0.61 | ~$0.90 |
Last quarter, SoFi guided to $4.75–$4.85 billion of 2026 revenue. The new number is a big step up.
The risks
- Credit cycle. Personal loans are unsecured. If unemployment rises, charge-offs could climb quickly. US job growth was weak in September.
- Rates. SoFi benefits from high rates today. Falling rates would compress its margin, while much higher rates could hurt borrowers.
- Valuation and volatility. Fintech stocks swing hard. SoFi's 13% one-day jump shows how much sentiment matters.

What it means for you
As a customer: SoFi's growth reflects demand for higher-yield savings and consolidated personal loans. Compare rates across banks; see high-yield savings vs money market funds.
As an investor: SoFi is now a profitable, fast-growing bank, but still a higher-risk stock. If you own it, keep it a modest slice of a diversified portfolio.
For the economy: Strong loan demand and falling charge-offs are a sign consumers are borrowing and repaying. That fits with October's jump in consumer confidence (our report).
