LVMH's Fashion Sales Fell 5% as Chinese Shoppers Pulled Back. Is the Luxury Slump Getting Worse?
- LVMH's organic sales rose 1% to €18.5 billion in Q3 2026, short of the 1.3% analysts expected.
- Fashion and leather goods, home of Louis Vuitton and Dior, fell 5%, worse than the 1.8% drop forecast.
- Sales in Asia fell 5%. The US rose 5%, Japan 6%, and Europe grew at a mid-single-digit pace.
- Sephora's division grew 8%. Watches and jewellery and wines and spirits each grew 6%.
- Nine-month sales were €57.1 billion, up 2% organically but down 2% in reported euros. Europe's luxury groups have lost about €330 billion of market value this year.
What happened
LVMH, the world's largest luxury group, reported third-quarter sales after the Paris market closed on Monday, October 12. It owns Louis Vuitton, Dior, Tiffany, Sephora, Moët & Chandon and dozens of other brands.
The headline was weak. Organic sales, which strip out currency swings, rose just 1% to €18.5 billion. Analysts expected 1.3%.

Fashion and leather goods is LVMH's most profitable division by far. When it shrinks, profits feel it more than sales.
By region
- Asia (mostly China): −5%
- United States: +5%
- Japan: +6%
- Europe: mid-single-digit growth
LVMH's finance chief blamed a sharp deterioration in Chinese consumer sentiment driven by the economy. Chinese shoppers have been cutting back on expensive handbags and clothes for two years.
Management said Louis Vuitton grew less than average, partly because of a logistics problem, while Dior did well.
The bigger picture
For the first nine months, LVMH's sales were €57.1 billion. That's up 2% organically but down 2% in euros, because the stronger euro shrinks sales made in dollars and yuan.
Investors have noticed. Europe's top luxury groups have lost about €330 billion of market value since January. Analysts said these results could lead to more forecast cuts for late 2026 and 2027.
Why it matters beyond handbags
It's a read on China. China's factories are booming. Its exports rose 36% in September. But its households aren't spending. Luxury sales are one of the clearest signs.
It's a read on the consumer split. In the same week, Canada's Aritzia said sales jumped 44%, mostly from US shoppers. Americans are still buying, especially mid-priced brands and beauty.
It's in your index fund. LVMH is one of Europe's largest companies, so it sits in most European and international ETFs.
What it means for investors
Cheaper isn't the same as cheap. Luxury stocks are well below their highs, but a rebound needs Chinese shoppers to return. Nobody knows when that will happen. Our explainer on China's economy covers what to watch.
Diversification helps. LVMH itself is diversified: Sephora and jewellery are offsetting fashion. A broad fund does the same thing across hundreds of companies.
What to watch next
- Hermès and Kering results later in October, for whether the slump is LVMH-specific or industry-wide.
- China's holiday spending and any new government stimulus.
- The euro. A weaker euro would lift reported sales.
Frequently asked questions
How did LVMH do in Q3 2026?
LVMH's organic sales rose 1% to €18.5 billion in the third quarter of 2026, missing analysts' expectations of 1.3% growth. Fashion and leather goods fell 5%, while selective retailing, which includes Sephora, grew 8%.
Why are LVMH sales falling?
The main problem is China. LVMH's finance chief pointed to a sharp, economy-driven drop in Chinese consumer confidence that has hit spending on luxury goods. Sales in Asia fell 5% in the quarter. A stronger euro also lowered reported sales.
Which LVMH businesses are growing?
Selective retailing, led by Sephora, grew 8%. Watches and jewellery and wines and spirits each grew 6%. By region, the US grew 5%, Japan 6% and Europe at a mid-single-digit rate. Management said Dior's bags and ready-to-wear performed well.
Are luxury stocks a good buy in 2026?
Luxury stocks have fallen sharply, which makes them cheaper, but a turnaround depends on Chinese consumers regaining confidence, which is hard to predict. Large luxury companies are also held in most European and international index funds. This is educational information, not investment advice.
What is organic sales growth?
Organic growth strips out currency changes and acquisitions or sales of businesses, to show how much the existing business really grew. LVMH's organic growth was 1% in Q3 2026, while its reported sales in euros were lower because of currency moves.
